rockTREND: Animal Print

RAWR! Oh, sorry, I got a little carried away with all of the animal print I’ve been seeing lately!

In case you’ve been living under a rock, animal print is back this season and it’s huge. There doesn’t seem to be a specific print this fall, although I have been noticing lots of leopard and snake skin (my personal favorite).

Concerned about wearing animal print and drawing too much attention to yourself? No worries! Luckily, the prints are very natural this season – meaning you won’t be trying to figure out how to mix and match a neon pink zebra striped top with a green leopard print bottom – whew. It’s also become very minimal. I would not recommend going about your daily life in head-to-toe leopard print. Instead, maybe use it as your accent piece. Not sure what I mean? Here, let me show you.

As you can see, it’s very easy to tame the wild animal inside of you…by showing it off with your clothing! The snake skin look gives you a perfect everyday outfit to go out and hang out with friends. The leopard look gives you a classy work outfit that will make your coworkers envious of your style. Lastly, the subtle zebra print with less-subtle neon yellow shoes is a perfect match for a night out on the town (without the hat) or a weekend hangout (with the hat)!

There are so many ways to rock animal print! How do you like to style it?

rockST*R Taylor Momsen of The Pretty Reckless

The Pretty Reckless is currently on their fall tour in the U.S. and they were recently here in Tempe, AZ performing at the Marquee Theater. The show was amazing, with Taylor Momsen loving on the stage and her bandmates. This is why I decided she was going to be my first rockST*R of the blog.

If you aren’t familiar with the raw rock ‘n roll music of The Pretty Reckless, I recommend you check out their newest single, Going To Hell. The leather-clad singer seduces her audience in the video with her blonde locks, her heavy-duty makeup, and the skin-tight jumpsuit. However, I want to take a look at how she dresses when she’s not playing with snakes in music videos with nearly 10 million views.

Every time I see  a picture or video of Momsen, she always seems to be wearing the color black. Even when I saw her perform in person, she was wearing an all-black ensemble. Not that I have a problem with the color black, in fact it’s very edgy and rock ‘n roll. That’s probably why she prefers it.

With her black, edgy pieces, how is it possible to take her look and turn it into a fashion statement? Let me show you some examples that I have put together.

Momsen loves her black, her boots, her giant sunglasses, and her crosses; or at least that’s what it seems. These are things I incorporated when creating these styles on Polyvore.

Have any other ideas for Momsen-inspired outfits? What do you think of her fashion and her out-there attitude?

Wait a Minute – What Happened to the Site?

What happened to the site, you ask? Oh, just some re-branding, that’s all.

That’s right. rockIT Fashion is taking a whole new spin on being a modern, unique fashion blog. We are going back to the roots of the blog, updating readers on fashion trends happening in the world of good ‘ole rock ‘n roll. We said goodbye to Temperature Tuesdays over a year ago and started focusing more on semi-monthly Polyvore collages that really had nothing to do with rock ‘n roll. That’s all going to change.

Starting this week, there will be weekly posts on two different topics: rockTRENDS and rockST*R.

rockTRENDS: These posts will be updating you on the current season’s trends and how you can wear them in a fashionably rock ‘n roll way.

rockST*R: These posts will take a look at what today’s rock stars are wearing. I will then show you how to wear their looks in your daily life.

rockDATES: Basically my way of saying updates for the blog. If I change something, I’m going to let you know, and it’s going to be in this category.

I am going to be trying my best to keep up with this blog on a weekly basis. Be patient, have fun, and most importantly: Rock on.

Yesterday kicked off the first day of fall for 2014! I can’t believe it’s already here. With the seasons changing and the temperatures finally getting lower, it’s time to get out our leather pants again. I personally cannot wait.

Nearly-Twenty Fashion Epiphany

Dear Readers,

In less than two months, I will be turning 20. I will no longer be considered a “teenager” and will have gone over the border into adulthood. Granted, I’ve lived on my own for three years now. However, being a teenager is rough as I have been struggling to find myself and figure out who I am. When I first started college in 2011, I was coming into it with my high school wardrobe. I was wearing t-shirts, jeans (or shorts), and always my staple piece: a scarf.

My freshman year (2011)
My freshman year (2011)

As my freshman year came to an end, I got hired at Payless as a sales associate in March of 2012. Although we didn’t have a uniform, we had a semi-strict dress code of business-casual attire. This meant no jeans and t-shirt. I was at a loss, as that was all I owned at the time. I went out to Ross and bought a couple of work-appropriate dresses. This was my first time really shopping outside of my comfort zone, and let me tell ya – I did not do a good job. I bought some ugly grandma dress with rose prints and an awkward cut along with two other hideous dresses. However, it was those dresses that got me started on something new. What if I were to dress more girly, but keep it more in my taste? For the next year and a half, I started dressing up a lot more. I wore more skirts, dresses, and came to terms with my new shoe fetish (especially with heels).

I started this blog however to write about modern punk/rock fashion and I had started turning it also into a more girly experience. However, this morning I woke up and had a fashion crisis while getting ready for class. I tried on nearly everything in my closet and hated it. I scanned over the t-shirts that I have and dismissed them as not being fashionable enough. However, time was running out and if I didn’t get ready in time I was going to have to show up to class naked which, well, wouldn’t have been a good idea. I finally decided on my classic look: T-shirt, jeans, scarf. I even just slipped on a pair of flip flops and called it a day. I began to notice that I felt much more comfortable in today’s outfit. Not because it was just a casual look, but because it felt very ME. This brought me to an epiphany. Why try to force myself to wear these garments, although cute, aren’t made for me? I mean. I have an ice cream dress for Pete’s sake. It is adorable, but when wearing it, I don’t feel like myself. I do love dresses and I’m not saying I won’t wear them anymore. What I’m saying is I need to go back to the roots of who I am and dress more like that than dressing like someone else. Hell, let me buy a dress with studs and wear some cute booties to go with it. But maybe stay away from ice cream.

Love,
Ash

Ps. This has just been a random epiphany post about my personal life. Don’t expect too many of these to happen as I plan on keeping this as editorial as possible.

P.s.s. I have some great projects coming up that I am working on and planning right now that I will share with you guys when I have put it all together!

Challenge yourself: What else is in? Mixing and matching prints of course! Take this trend and double it up with the mix & match. Take some bold stripes and mix them together with a floral print! Or use your own twist on this trend. I know this one is definitely tricky for me. Hint: Use similar color patterns to make the outfit flow together.

Love,
Ash
